Globally, HIV/AIDS remains one of the most serious public health challenges, with 33 million people infected in 2008, of which 5.7 million were living in South Africa.1 KwaZuluNatal is the leading province in South Africa where HIV/ AIDS is concerned, with 1.6 million people infected with the disease.1 Since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART), a significant improvement has been seen in patients’ quality of life, thus making HIV infection a chronic manageable condition.2,3
